Kel Elliot & her 3 man Orchestra
Wed 14 Sept 2016
Kel Elliot (Double bass and Vocals) Kelvin Leitch, Hugh Rashleigh and Adam Cross (Miscellaneous!)
After being hand picked by Jo Whiley and Jamie Cullum for The BBC Introducing stage at The Cheltenham Jazz Festival this year, local singer/songwriter Kel Elliot will be performing with her three man orchestra. Kel is a sassy double-bass playing singer who likes to tell stories: her own and other people's. Expect something a little bit different with on stage humour, irony and a touch of mischief. The audience describe Kel's performances as 'a journey of emotion'. Many laugh, then shed a tear all in the space of a few moments. Drawing from influences as eclectic as Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, Regina Spektor and Rufus Wainwright, her set can be soft and sentimental one minute and unflinchingly eccentric the next.
Nic Meier Quartet
Wed 28 Sept 2016
Nic Meier (Guitar) Asaf Sirkis (Drums) Kevin Glasgow (Bass) Richard Jones (Violin)
Nic visited Stratford Jazz last year with the Oxley/Meier guitar duo. Swiss born guitarist Nicolas is comfortable in many situations and draws influence from Turkish and Middle Eastern folk, Flamenco, Tango and a good dose of Jazz. He also has a love of rock music and has been a member of Jeff Beck's group for a number of years.
With a lineup of Remi on acoustic and electric guitars accompanied by a hot club rhythm section of guitar and double bass, the Remi Harris Project take gypsy swing characteristics and infuse them with influences from Jazz, Blues, Rock'n'Roll, Funk, World Music and more. The show includes solo, duet and trio playing interspersed with Remi's commentary and includes repertoire from Django Reinhardt, Charlie Parker, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix and Peter Green to name a few.
"incredible guitarist... I'm absolutely blown away by his talent" Jamie Cullum
"Remi Harris is one of the most exciting young guitarists in the Gypsy Jazz world" Martin Taylor
Andrea Vicari (Piano) Mornington Lockett (Sax) Dorian Lockett (Bass) Nic France (Drums)
A mid season special event for Stratford Jazz featuring some of the very best UK Jazz musicians around. This will be held in the auditorium with cabaret style seating. Andrea Vicari is on tour to promote her new album Mirrors. Based on varied styles and grooves from Flamenco to South African rhythms; whilst showcasing the extraordinary improvisational skills of virtuosos Mornington Lockett (sax) - as well as her own piano playing described by JazzUK magazine as " a constant delight - intense, probing, and generating a seemingly endless succession of ideas". Although Elvis Stanic is also on the album, it is with regret that we are unable to fly him over for this gig.
